Rules of Engagement
When I was in the army, we heard about Rules of Engagement (ROE) and Laws of Armed Conflicts (LOAC). Google and youtube, quite alot of text and videos, even a movie was made.
There are many changes over last 10 years. With technological advances, many satelites are launched. Military wise, before you start walking infantry style, the enemy will be waiting for you. Thus, light strike forces, quick deployment forces, are favoured now.
In Singapore, 10 years ago, there are few cases of illegal parking. Rules are heavily enforced, and the government is considered rigid and inflexible. Today, while eating at a coffeeshop. There was a no parking sign, and there were more than 10 vehicles illegally parked at a small lane.I see, I shake head.
When I was a child, it is normal to accord respect to parents, teachers and elderly. A wrong move will lead to a beating, sometimes by cane or belt.I was tutoring a boy, and he kept making wisecracks and jokes disrespectfully. Taking time off to reflect and observe, children are are mini-emperors in Singapore, and may depend on rewards such as gifts and activities for motivations. Many children appeared smart, but lacked maturity. Yet, many talked and behave disrespectfully to the teachers and elders. It is sad.
Rules of engagement in many areas of work, businesses, relationships are changing. Previously, life is pretty defined like in a football match, offside, blindspot and so forth. Today, with areas of work, family and life is like a wrestling match, where rules are thrown out the window, where there is never time to do things right, but there is time to do it again.
So, are we advancing better in life? We are more mobile, Yes. But ethics, morals, in a simplified manner, is compromised, and degraded. Haiz.
