Many years back, before being a parent and as an inexperienced staff on children programme, I have a habit of talking down to children and not helping them. It is a MONOLOGUE!I talk and you listen kinda mentality.
Working with children, I understand as being a father, means listening to them. LIsten with ear, minds and heart. We may not agree, but we could take a step to listen. It is a dialogue, two ways communication, not just parent to child.
There are many things I learn from children. Years back, a 8 year old boy asked me,”Mr Ang, is a spider an insect? “I scratched my head. Die. Dunno the answer. I told him that when we were young, our science was much simpler. He went back to his teacher and came back to me. He insist that spider is not an insect. Spiders have two body parts and insects and three. Insects have 6 legs. I was embarrassed but went to the Internet to research. He is right.
THere are countless examples of what the children taught me,Some are jokes, some songs. A girl asked me, Mr Ang, what is -1+2-3+4…….-1999+2000.” I went to the Internet, tried some ways and managed to download three formulaes that took 30 minutes to solve. I was then sharing the question to one of the gifted boys, and without blinking or talking out a paper, told me, “Thats easy. 1000.” I was amazed. He then told me” In long and big ..to be continued….
