It was a stressful week, personally and professionally. Just when it looks that gloom is set, I found relief in a taxi driver who rushed me home.
Joke 1: Mr TD (Taxi driver) was driving as a novice, very anxious for customer. He was getting agitated and angry but after 2 hours, still couldn’t get any. He called a friend who advised him, “Just go for a 30 min coffee break”. He drove to the nearest coffee shop to visit the toilet and drink coffee, and before he turned in, someone flagged his cab.
Joke 2: Mr TD was driving in a long stretch of road in a off road private estate and cannot get out. HOw he twist and turn still stuck. Lastly, he said to his cab, “Buddy, dun be like this. Give chance”. Within 5 minutes, he found his way out. spooky but damn funni.
Joke 3: Mr TD at 2m was driving a passenger off to a hdb in Tampines. It was a heavy downpour, so he expected that at 2am, there will be no passengers. It is time to go coffeeshop for a drink. The passenger alighted below a block, and he heard a thud. Next minute, he heard, “Beach Road”. He was startled as mostly, there will be twice opening off doors, but in this case, as the passenger was alighting, the other passenger was so fast and urgent that he came in from the same point. Again„,the TD was so funni that tears roll down.
Lets enjoy the things we have, and jsut let nature takes its course. Really enjoyed the luff theraphy.
Bigger, faster, better, smaller…fast moving product, fast moving goods. The world is moving in a age dictated by marketing and consumers studies, such that companies with better budget and marketing with more innovative products will win the race. The ipad and tablet are basically same computers with processing and memory, but quicker turn on or off due to better hibernation in chips, and design and form factor makes it light and mobile. But in simple, still a computer.
HOUSTON (Reuters) - The arrest of an American man who broke into a woman’s house and tried to suck her blood over the weekend has sparked discussion about the impact of vampire books and movies on youth culture.
Whether pop culture played a role in the attack remains to be seen, as 19-year-old Lyle Monroe Bensley awaits a psychiatric evaluation in jail on burglary charges in Galveston, Texas.
Found growling and hissing in a parking lot and wearing only boxer shorts, the pierced and tattooed Bensley claimed he was a 500-year-old vampire who needed to “feed,” Galveston Police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.
Vampires have been a focal point of literature since Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, “Dracula”. But fascination, particularly among young people, has peaked in recent years with the popularity of the “Twilight” books about teenage vampires and the television series, “True Blood.”
"I think the vampire is a metaphor for the outsider and the predator in all of us," said author Anne Rice, whose Vampire Chronicles series has captured the imaginations of horror fans since the 1970s.
"We’re all conscious at times of being alone, of being alienated, of being a secret self that fears exposure to the judgments of others. So we feel like vampires," she told Reuters.
Bensley is now being held in the Galveston County Jail on a $40,000 bond for home burglary with intent to commit a felony.
The woman, who lived near Bensley and did not know him, escaped the attack unharmed, Heyse said.
Kevin Petroff, chief of the Galveston County District Attorney’s office, told Reuters no defense attorney has been appointed to date, and if Bensley had hired a lawyer privately, no notice had been filed.
YOUTHFUL FOR ETERNITY
Dr. Thomas Garza, who teaches a course in vampire lore at the University of Texas, said young people might aspire to be like vampires because they cheat death and are able to stay beautiful, powerful, and youthful for eternity.
The modern vampire in popular culture is more attractive, suave, and fashionably dressed than the Old World Slavic vampires, adding to the resurgence of their appeal, he added.
"I would say that it is the Twilight saga in particular that has brought out the younger teen fans. In that connection, Edward is a very ‘safe’ vampire, a kind of ‘starter vamp’ for beginners, if you will," Garza said.
"He’s pretty, yes, so the seduction’s there, but he’s more than reluctant to act on his and Bella’s sexual desires. He can go out in daylight - and even ‘sparkles’ in the sun, giving him a completely non-threatening character. He drives a Volvo, for goodness sake."
While Bensley’s Texas antics have captured international attention, the delusion of actually being a vampire has been a contributing factor in other criminal cases as well.
In 1996, a 16-year-old Kentucky youth obsessed with the role-playing game, “Vampire, the Masquerade,” enlisted three other teenagers to go with him to Florida to help kill the parents of his former girlfriend.
Two years later, a San Francisco man claiming to be a 2,000-year-old vampire was arrested for slashing the necks of four homeless people, one fatally. A serial killer arrested in England in 1949 allegedly drank a cup of blood from each of his six victims.
Rice has interacted with thousands of fans of her Vampire Chronicles novels, but said such intense personal identification with vampires was “quite beyond me.”
"My readers are romantics. They’re into the poetry and the romance of vampires; they don’t think they themselves are vampires," Rice said. "I have never personally met anyone in all these years who claimed to be a vampire."
The ‘cognitive computers’ built with these chips are designed to replicate the brain’s abilities for perception, action and cognition- meaning that they can “learn through experiences, find correlations, create hypotheses, and remember – and learn from – the outcomes,” IBM say.
The jump in microprocessor sophistication is still in the experimental stages but could develop computer systems to understand human behavior as well as record environmental measurements and issue disaster warnings ahead of time.
IBM says that the retail industry could also benefit from the research as chips integrated into instrumented gloves could “monitor sights, smells, texture and temperature to flag bad or contaminated produce”.
“These chips are another significant step in the evolution of computers from calculators to learning systems, signaling the beginning of a new generation of computers and their applications in business, science and government,” said IBM Research project leader, Dharmendra Modha.
“Imagine traffic lights that can integrate sights, sounds and smells and flag unsafe intersections before disaster happens or imagine cognitive co-processors that turn servers, laptops, tablets, and phones into machines that can interact better with their environments,” he added.
IBM and its academic partners have been given a $21m (£12.7m) grant by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to further develop the generation of chips currently being tested in New York and California.
Artificial intelligence, thus leading to learned knowledge, could ultimately lead to men demise such as prophesized by movies such as MATRX, TERMINATOR and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. Sad for commercial, people are playing God.
What is camouflage? It is blending in, to look alike. Predators such as lions are sand colored to blend in with the sandy terrain of the kalahari dessert, the stick insect looks invisible until close and careful inspection, and chameleons are a dear in that they are like color printers, in which they can have different tones and limitations.
Mimicry is to look like another species. Some butterflies mimic moth in the wings colors and patterns. This is to confuse birds as some moths taste bad to birds, so if these birds think the butterflies are moths, these birds will not hunt them down.
Have fun with camouflage.
For guys, why are there changes in the army uniform from Temasek green in 80s, to leaves patterns and strips in black, green and brown, to the subsequent pixelised dot matrix?
I have taught early intervention many years ago. While many of us see uniqueness and may not be able to identify with terms such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactive DISORDER (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, DOWN Syndrome and so forth, it is easier to find support and information today, due to technological advances, but the next question is, which is suitable for my child?
While I may not be qualified to cover extensive medical enquries, but through much contacts and observation, many have the similiar needs as normal children, but may need qualified caregivers to meet the needs.
One incident that I hope to highlight is about Learnt Hopelessness. What is learnt hopelessness? simply, it may mean doing too much for a child that he/she does not develop skills or habits to do things himself or herself. Imagine that a child with a learning disorder refuses to speak but you understand simple gestures. Instead of encouraging him to speak, or work with speech therapies, you may give in and do things based on your understanding of gestures.
For a short period, all seems well. But the child may developed a habit on depending on gestures, and you are accidentally rewarding the child based on your simple understanding that you are just helping out. For learnt hopelessness, over a period, it develops into a habit that is difficult to unlearn. Mostly, child will escalate tantrum until caregiver gives way.
Learn to equip and guide. They need the skills in long term.
Are you helping a butterfly out of a cocoon, and it cannot fly later?
I truly enjoy puzzles, optical illusions and games. I feel good to learn new things in an enjoyable pace and manner.
Likewise, I have built resource of optical illusion books, a few card tricks. Sometimes, what we see may be misleading, to the good or to the bad. Likewise, I teach my kids that while some things may be fun, some are dangerous.
Thus, have fun. Have think deep and wide before making major decisions.
Today, my 3 year old son told me: daddy, I am praying for you. I asked him why. He told me: mum is praying with him to control my anger.I raised my eyebrow. I asked him why again. He pointed at his hand.
Two weeks ago, my son was disobedient and I had in anger slapped his hands thrice. His hands were all red, and he was crying in pain.My wife had to use ice. Even after the incident, he will ask my wife to get him ice, as he remembered the incident.
I have a bad temper. In anger, it leashes out with an explosiveness. I sometimes am able to walk away, but most times have to control myself. It is not easy.
God wants you to know that you become what you do. Life molds itself into the shape of your actions, - do something long enough and you become it. Fighting for peace makes more war. Loving for peace makes more peace.
