A re-run of younger days. When young, youth may hang out in groups and also prone to impulsive acts. They may also be edged on by peers, and in group size, there is an advantage ti intimidate.
These are processes that will in evitably lead to conflicts, and later revenge. 1 or more persons will eventually get hurt, sometimes mortally.
To the youths and children, learn to control your anger and do not be involved in group violence. Good choices will lead to good consequences, and bad choices to bad consequences. Group taking on smaller sizes are BULLIES, lack of integrity. Anyone can use violence, but deliberating and using other means to achieve the ends is more profitable and show you are a more balanced person.
Patterns can help to give a better understanding of problems. Most families face same issues in relationships, career stress, children education, children behavioural issues arising from choice-consequences of child or peer influence, or media influence from magazines, televisions or Internet.
In life processes, the preventive and curative model is important. The preventive aspect is normally through education, cause and effect models, or case studies of others who have gone through these problems. Examples are a child becoming delinquent, adults having heart condition, loss of property due to fire, family problems.
A curative approach is to repair the damage and rehabilitate after damage is being done. When a child becomes a delinquent, the cure over short or long term may be prison or boys/girls home. A person who has preventable heart condition, but now is dependent on medicine and surgeries to stay alive. A fire can be prevented by not playing matches, putting flammable substances from the sun. Family problems may be resolved by changing expectations, managing conflicts or looking or external counselors such as pastors. Some family problems cannot be cured.
Greek question: What crawls with four legs when young, walks with two legs when older, and when old, uses three legs?
There are memories etched in our hearts in the absene of technology such as cameras or video cameras. My mind and heart may not be able to remember vividly and totally the sounds and images of my past, but I could still vividly remember many memories of school days, my jobs, relationships and important events.
I remember my pastor coming to my house.I apologise for the mess, but he told me he came to visit the people, and he is not concern with the state of the house. Lets eyched in our heart and memories the good things. Cheers and shalom.
The East and Asia has always looked to the West in terms of technology advances. While there are constructive and good practices, I was appalled at how they look at us. The Asians are joked at or stereotyped in a way that I find not amusing. While they preach about democracy and respect, I wonder how much was being enforced, especially over the Internet.
Small things snowball to big things. If people don’t accord me respect, it is difficult for me to do the same. Extremely sad.
We have a home, one with our families, siblings, parents. Our bigger home is that of our country, a land we call home, in my case Singapore.
We need a united family, where each family member is a stakeholder, who tolerate and love each other.
We need a united community of people, tolerant of differences in minds or pracrices, to be integrated. When the country falls, the families falls. When the families falls, the countries falls.Remember the Japanese Occupation, The Twin Towers of US, and Racial Riots in Singapore. It must not happen again.
Street Directory vs Global Positioning System (GPS)
I was looking for a place, but I prefer to walk and enjoy the scene and exercise. I has consulted a map and roughly could remember in my head. It was from a MRT station and estimated 15-20min walk, roughly diagonal.
As I was walking, I started reflecting. Life is like a street directory, we try to find references points in life, we blunders, make U-turns and waste some time. We make mistakes and learn from it.
Some people try to make life like a GPS. They try not to make mistakes, to be efficient and programmed themselves in safe manners.
I believe there are many aspects of life we should find a mix and use suitable tools. I am not against the GPS, but want to be flexible in that if the GPS is not accurate or something happen to the system, do I have the skills to navigate without it. Enjoy life, learn to smell the roses, and making some mistakes here and there I think is forgiveable. Don’t take life too seriously. Cheers
Mind anchor is a term whereby the mind is stuck on something and cannot move on. I was watching a Japanese movie about a female doctor who could not save her dying fiance, and after his death, her mind was anchored and in limbo. It takes a long time to get her to accept his death and move on.
When I started learning to refresh my driving last year, I had drove once and forgotten where I had place my street directory. My wife was urging me to move, and I was driving but my mind was anchor on the missing street directory. A passing taxi honked and pointed to my car roof. Wen I checked and found my street directory, it was a relief and I moved on.
In life, we will face difficult times when we might have our minds anchored, paralysed with fear. We need to learn to accept and move on.
An important program that I have developed over 8 years is how to find information, A child has to know how to learn to learn. This means understanding sources of information:
Books, activities and mind-maps are developed using keywords, and efficiency of finding human organs by different science books. Practicuum is getting a continual practice of finding information through wall charts. Even spelling is from extension or variations of words by wall posters.
Teach them to find, to trigger and develop thinking patterns. Hooha. Data Reconnaisance.
My wish for the people I have in contact is to build two aspects:
1. Flexible Thinking- (Intellectual and Emotional) To think logically but yet transcends languages or cultures. The paradigms, contexts and frames
2. Constructive Builders-( Emotional and Social) To build their lives based on ethical and moral grounds
Children who have good foundations in values, skills and habits will most likely developed certain patterns when they becomes youths and adults. If they could pattern and model in a constructive way, that hardwork is important, that fillial piety and selflessness are important, then I have done my job.
In a world that there are no many temptations and opportunities to do wrong, let us be firm to say a lie is a lie, and a sin is a sin. Lets not package bad things in a creative way. I do not need to be popular.
Religion plays an important part of my life…reflection is part of it as well…
I love songs..there is a therapneutic effect…In the army..the songs are sung with gusto..to improve confidence and morale…also a form of distraction from boredom, pain and tiredness
Fatherhood is not an isolated part of life. Fathers are professionals, we need to work and have an income. Fathers are Husbands, Children and Siblings as well, we need to fufil our roles to our wife, children and parents. Fathers are part of communities, whether it is demographical, our interest groups or religious…
These are some songs I sing and learn, it helps to clear my mind from distractedness and focus on the family and other needs.I believe in the meaning of words, not just the rhythm or melody.
Children model. I believe the kids nowadays have more exposure and earlier exposure. They learn more and faster, because we re-direct playtime and playground time to tutorials and assessments. HOwever, given they are better thinkers, they lack maturity and cause and effect. Parents and caregivers must be firm and take the rein. We love them, and sometimes, love= saying no.
the 7 Habits of Happy Kids – Sean Covey - The 7 Habits of Happy Kids Thank’s to my friend Dyah Sari who… http://is.gd/g4zmL #blog
I love MLE (mediated learning experience). In education, I am also aware of NLP (neurolinguistics programmin) and a host of memory programs. I believe we all know what to do. Study, revise, do homework, clear doubts…it is a matter of how we do it and when do we do it. I had read and enjoyed stephen covey’s book on effective habits.
Put it to practice, and fine tune your crafts..cheerios. Shalom and God bless. Thanks lubis.
I suddenly was awaken to the meaning of trust and obey.
When we are sick and see the doctor, te only thing that makes us better is to follow the advice of the doctor and take the medicine. To follow instructions means to have trust. If we do not trust, we will not follow the prescribed medication, and will not recover.
When we do not do well, it may mean that we do not follow the instructions of our teachers. We do not follow means we do not trust or like the teachers, thus we may not fare well.
In our spiritual lives, some of us are selective when to follow and what to follow. Trust and obey,
I was looking at TGIF-Thank God its Friday. Why only Friday? Because of weekends? Today, I was at a bank which says its open every Sunday, and they have a TGIS-Thank God its Sunday. Why only Sunday?
A friend of mine had a son who had heart problems since birth. I am very close to that friend. When the son passed away before 1 years old, it was depressing. I was close to my friend’s mum, who was looking after, and she had talked to me about the conditions of the death.
I myself had moments in life and during army where it is unbearable. Suicide is an option, when we say we give up. God helped me make it though.
Life is precious. I will wake up each day and give thanks, for the precious gift of life. If there are setbacks, let us think of those in hospice, of those who are fighting to stay alive, a child, an adult, an elderly.
TGIA - THANKS God, I am alive, monday to sunday and the cycle so continue. Shalom. Cheers and God bless.
National geographic with kids - I could say majority of singaporean are quite affluent that they can afford… http://is.gd/g2SrP #blog
I am a firm believer in loyalty. I believe in sholastic, lawrence E. shapiro and reuven feurenstein. For discovery, there are videos in youtubes and discounted versions in bras besah. Although second hands are more worn, the contents are still the same, equally intriguing and valuable. And yes, I love National Geographic and reader’s digest, just that they are seconda hands from Bras Besah.
Children with special needs aren’t sick or gross. They only want what we all want: to be accepted. Can I make a request of anyone willing to post this and leave it on your status for at least an hour? It is Special Education Week, this is in honor of all children made in a unique way and who learn a little differently.
I came from a polytechnic. Before that I was from STI, Singapore Technical Institute, a defunct VITB. People call us condemn, trash when I was in ITE.
I have done some service learning with JC students. They are pretty hard-working and obedient, most of them. They are also youth, trying to find their identities.
I was once a youth. I don’t think I was hardworking. I am playful and distracted, thats why I was in the ITE.
I believe there will always a majority and a minority. A majority of good teachers, a minority of bad teachers. A majority of good students, a minority of bad students. I see Asia one and I sense sensationalism. Tad irresponsible. If there are 400 students, 380 good ones, and 20 bad ones, do you drag the school’s name in MUD? That is a pretty irresponsible accusation.Sex sells, publishers knows this. But are you helping the children, the school? The children will withdraw and you are pushing the problem underground. The teachers are having a tough job teaching, and you are adding to the stress load.
I don’t agree with homosexuals (gays or lesbians). However, there are responsibilities the schools, parents and children are trying to cope with daily living without the media focusing on everybody’s faults.
Some of you should watch GTO or Emergency Room. We are trying to help people, the starfish story, and each live is precious. And some people each day keeps using certain stories to divert our time to do fire-fighting. I am beyond sad, I am bereaved. There are choice-consequences for journalism, hopefully responsible journalism.
intervention (teaching from teachers and learning from students)
assessments (to assess knowledge and understanding, in forms of tests and exams).
Exams are to assess whether someone has due dilligence in competancy of subject. If maths exam is good, means student has paid attention, done homework and remember how to use maths principles in solution development.
I was at a clinic and a deliveryman was talking to the nurse. He is quitting the job after 5 years. According to the nurse, this deliveryman has a good track record, but was complained once last month. This complained was taken seriously by the company, but the deliveryman has said he had tried his best.
I was once asked if bad news travel faster than good news. I believe it is a paradigm. Some people find comfort in company, or enjoy grousing. We remember bad service, but we take good service for granted. It is where our focus is:if there are 8 good attributes and 2 bad attributes, where is our focus?
Lets learn to see more and remember more of the good things. For the bad news and others, I am goona adopt my son, Aarons “Never mind”. To err is human, to forgive divine.
I was waiting for a bus 124 from church yesterday evening. The roads are congested and buses are packed. when bus 124 came, it was packed too. However, instead of being empty at the rear and packed at the front, the passengers exercise consideration and welfare by moving to the rear. People outside the buses are waiting to go home to meet loved ones, some are tired after a day’s work.
As I go in, the following stops are met with the same processes, as passengers leave, others gladly move to the rear, some giving up seats to the elderly or children.
This is a simple experience, but something good to remember and remind ourselves to be nice to our community.
There are times we make mistakes. In career, life, relationships and any aspect of life.
As we grow older, we may want to help or correct others, but sometimes it is delivered wrongly. It becomes stressful.
As a teacher, sometimes I scold or punish the students, or even my own children. But when it is my turn on the receiving end, I hope they will forgive me.
Sometimes I make promises to my kids that I cannot keep, then my son, Aaron will come over and say ” never mind”. Along the way, I remember how God forgive others, and I should model myself after good examples.
When there are small mistakes, I will start to say, “lets learn from our mistakes, and move on…its alright, thank you Aaron, for your never mind…
Forgiving oneself - Teachers, doctors, social workers
Sometimes, teachers, doctors, social workers try their best and things failed. People die, people failed and people get hurt.
Accidents or incidents happen regardless of best of planning, when circumstances dictate otherwise. When rescue divers and combat medics see death in the people they try to help, they feel guilty and hold themselves responsible.
Some teachers try their best to teach. A child refuses to co-operate. The teachers have a responsibility to the rest of the group, whether 1 or 20. But when the child failed later on in life, sometimes we feel guilty and hold ourselves responsible.
We are only humans. If we failed, but have tried our best, lets learn to accept and forgive ourselves. It is not easy.
A big thank you to ALL DOCTORS, TEACHERS, PASTORS, NURSES AND COUNSELLORS. We do our best, and if things don’t turn out well. Lets learn to forgive ourselves.
Personal- My wife, Christyne, is a beautiful and frank woman, hard on the outside and soft on the inside. My two kids, Charlotte, a wonderful and considerate daughter, who is a wonderful sibling to her younger two year old brother, Aaron.
My parents, who are also in their early sixties. Their needs and wants are evolving. Their health and mental states too.
I am in a “sandwich generation”. There is nothing to complain or grouse. My parents were “in a sandwich generation”, and so were their parents. They silently tried their best to cope, and now its me and my wife turn. we will try our best.
To focus on the family, one must take care of himself or herslf too. I exercise when time permits, not more than a cup of coffee or soda a day, and not more than 2 hours on computer if possible. I read lots too.
Anger and stress management are important. I am an aggressive person. Running helps to vent off frustrations. Learning to let go. My son, Aaron’s “never-mind” is something I should model. Kids have an amazing threshold of forgiveness. They forgive and let go.
Lastly, colleagues come and go, friends and jobs come in go. We start with our families, and end with our families. Lets work and enjoy our families. Cheers and have fun.Shalom.
Money Management for Kids and Adults (story of coke)
A can of coke at
- NTUC/sheng siong is about $0.70
- coffee-shop is about $1.00
- Food-court $1.20 to $1.40
- Resorts. discos or hotels is about $3 to $6
Whats the difference?
They are all manufactured at the same place, same taste, no more/less ingredients. The main difference lies in the ambience and convenience. However, if I buy a can of coke at a hotel at $6, I can but about 8 cans of coke. The main thrust is our habits and lifestyles helps us to save or spend. I am drinking coffee daily at $0.90.In my younger days, starbucks coffee daily costs me about $5. Multiply that by maybe 1 year I spend almost $1825 on coffee. Now I spend $329 on coffee.I save a whopping $1496 by switching brands.
Review spending habits, buy in bulks or switch places for shopping. Have a shopping list. Try not to buy in installations (must pay extra in interests) and say no to things we don’t need. Cheers.
